Advisory Committee News Release:
Advisory committee urges senate to hold hearings in West

Date: February 20, 1998

Winnipeg -- The Advisory Committee to the Canadian Wheat Board has asked the Senate to hold hearings in Western Canada regarding Bill C-4. During recent weeks, Committee members have spoken to the Senators who seem receptive to the idea of listening to farmers about the Act to Amend the Canadian Wheat Board.

"We urge the Senate to have a full debate on this most controversial Bill," said West-Central Saskatchewan Advisory Committee member Bill Rosher. "It is regrettable that the Liberals, with few elected members in the West, chose to use closure to strong arm Bill C-4 through the House of Commons."

The Committee feels that the Senators, particularly the Western members, can help to maintain a strong and effective CWB by listening to farmers.

"Mr. Goodale has steadfastly ignored proposals from pro-CWB farm groups for amendments to this Bill," said Advisory Committee member Bill Nicholson. "As the chamber for sober second thought we will be counting on the Senate to pass some amendments to improve this legislation."

The Advisory Committee consists of 11 members elected for a four-year term by farmers from across Western Canada. The Committee advises the CWB on issues and policy matters dealing with its operations, and provides communication between western grain producers and the CWB.
